Research Group on Multimodal Analysis of Brain Function (GRAMFC)

Research unit - UMR 1105

Description

Created in 2004, the GRAMFC brings together neuro-psychologists, neurophysiologists, paediatricians in intensive care, neuro-paediatricians, child psychiatrists, gynaeco-obstetricians and specialists in brain signal processing.

The GRAMFC, which has had the Inserm label since 2014 and works closely with the Amiens-Picardy University Hospital, focuses its research on the multimodal analysis of brain function and dysfunction, particularly in newborns.

One of its core competences is the development of non-invasive diagnostic tools for the simultaneous analysis of the modification of the local electrical and haemodynamic activity of the brain, under physiological (cerebral maturation) and pathological conditions (anoxic ischaemia in
the premature baby, neurological distress in the premature baby, convulsions and epilepsy in children).

In addition, the GRAMFC is developing high-resolution electrical imaging tools (EEGHR) coupled with high-resolution optical imaging (Fast and Slow NIRS HR) and diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) applied to children, especially newborns. These tools allow the laboratory to investigate a new field of research studying the mechanisms behind physiological and pathological neuronal synchronisation.

Expertises

Skills

• Initial neurodevelopment, with study of endogenous neurobiomarkers, and study of network functionality in response to exogenous language and music stimulation.

• Development of tools to analyse the implementation of neural networks.

• Neurodevelopmental consequences of initial neural network dysfunctions (epilepsy, autism, ADHD).

• Epilepsy studies (animal and child) using a multi-scale multimodal approach of neuronal, vascular and extracellular compartments.

• Language in electroencephalography and optical imaging.

Example(s) of projects

• Work on acquisition tools that have made it possible to develop: High Resolution EEG in premature newborns at 26 weeks of pregnancies and thus to better understand the establishment of neural networks at this early stage of development, a laboratory spin-off, Seenel Imaging, which commercializes the Medelopt device developed in the laboratory and consists of a portable device combining electroencephalography and optical imaging.

• Fetal and Neonatal Magnetoencephalography Project: Development of a Pump Magnetometer (MEG OPM) demonstration of fetal and neonatal magnetoencephalography. Partners: CEA Leti (Grenoble), Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), INRIA (Lille) and CHU de Lille et Amiens-Picardie.

• ANR IFCON Project: Development of tools for analysis of fetal brain oximetry during delivery.
Partner: CEA Leti (Grenoble).

• Neurobiom Iran Project: Development of tools for the analysis of the development of brain function of premature infants through studies on endogenous brain activity generators and in response to exogenous stimuli (music).
Partners: Universities of Mashhad, Tehran and Tabriz (Iran).

• PHRC Interregional MEMTA [associative memory in Autism Disorders without intellectual deficit]: Study in electroencephalography and neuropsychology (MEM-TA). Partner: Rouen

• Project Language: Study of the setting up of neural networks likely to participate in language function in premature babies.
Partner: CEA Saclay

• Regional project Spike: Study in humans and animals of the mechanisms underlying the emergence of epileptic spikes, using a multimodal approach in High Resolution EEG and Optical Imaging (fNIRS, Fast NIRS, DCS)
